Birding Lodges

We have selected top birding lodges in Costa Rica, lodges strategically located just minutes away from National Parks and Biological Reserves, or with their own private forest reserves with well-maintained trails, decks and observation towers, feeding stations and lush tropical gardens where birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals can be seen during the day and night.

We have chosen peaceful lodges, located far from the crowds and noises of civilization, surrounded by untouched wilderness, where you can sit by the fireplace on cool evenings to read a book, nap in a hammock after a morning of birding, hiking and exploration, or refreshing at the lodge’s swimming pool while enjoying the sounds of the tropical forest.

Depending on the location, the lodges offer excellent views of mountains, sea, volcanoes, valleys or rivers. We have chosen the lodges not only by their location and quality of their rooms, but also by the professionalism of their staff, lodges with a warm and friendly atmosphere, where you will feel at home.

One of the main features of the lodges is their beauty, built with pure materials, with wood taken from fallen trees, with spacious and elegantly tiled bathrooms with solar heated water, stone walls, with one or two queen sized beds, ample decks with spectacular views and cozy hammocks for the afternoon siestas. In summary, lodges designed with a mixture of elegance and rustic comfort.

Due to their remote setting, some of our lodges and biological stations are “off the grid” meaning there is no electricity, electronic devices and water are recharge and heated by solar power and dinners are served by candlelight.

Biological Stations in the Costa Rica are great sites not only for scientific research, but also for passionate birdwatchers. These stations offer accommodations that are modest and rustic but comfortable, providing most of the comforts that guests will expect. Cabins at the biological stations offer private or shared bathrooms, ceiling fans, individual beds, some provide hot water while others just cold water. Meals are served family style in the station’s dining room, and though you may have to renounce to certain commodities while staying at biological stations, their location and access to wildlife are extraordinary. In summary, biological stations offer an unparalleled experience for those eager to immersed in nature away from it all.

Rooms

We have selected lodges with comfortable rooms constructed from precious hardwoods and colorful tiles crafted by local artisans. Rooms are generally located at the edge of the forest or surrounded by lush gardens, which guarantees great birding from the comfort or your room’s porch or balcony.  At the lodges, rooms are spaced throughout the properties, allowing maximum peace and privacy.

Many rooms offer an open-air design, allowing inspiring views of the rainforest, ocean, volcanoes, mountains or river, and the most amazing symphony of sounds of birds, frogs and monkeys, allowing a close connection with the natural environment.

Rooms feature private bathrooms, some with stylish open-air showers, hot water, air conditioning, fine linens, queen size and single beds, fans, safety box, night tables with lamps, balconies and many more amenities that will make your stay enjoyable.

Food & Coffee - Grounds & Services

The lodges feature onsite restaurants serving fresh ground Costa Rican coffee together with local and international dishes, prepared with the best local and organic ingredients. Besides, our partner lodges strive to support the local farmers and food entrepreneurs, thus reducing the environmental impact of food transport and benefiting the local communities.

Additionally, the lodges offer lovely grounds and gardens, swimming pools, lounging areas, internet access, concierge offices and spa services for those wishing to pamper themselves after a day of hiking and birdwatching.
