Monteverde Cloud Forest

Monteverde is located up in mountains of the Tilarán Mountain Range of Costa Rica, overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya and right on the Continental Divide that separates the river systems that flow to opposite sides of the country.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest is lush, the temperature is cool and the biodiversity is vast. It has the most diverse range of orchids on the planet, with more than 500 species, it shelters 160 species of amphibians and reptiles, including frogs, lizards and snakes, 400 species of birds and 100 species of mammals, including monkeys, pacas, porcupines, bats, the country’s 6 species of felines and over 2500 plant species.

The Biological Reserves, Wildlife Refuges and Forest Reserves of Monteverde can be explored by trails, hanging bridges or trams, which allow you to observe the beautiful trees from above, as if flying over them.

Monteverde is the perfect example of early efforts from the private sector towards conservation. Since the 1970’s the Tropical Science Center acquired and set aside big portions of land for conservation, from this initiative the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve was originated, and during the years that follow, other protected areas were formed, such as the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Biological Reserve and the Children’s Eternal Rain Forest Reserve, which is Costa Rica’s largest private reserve and a hotspot for biodiversity, ecotourism, birdwatching, and hiking.
